Teachers will meet together in the fall to prioritize those English Language Arts skills in need of further study, using different forms of evidence.
They will define a critical skill to study throughout this year, using the formative assessment process endorsed by the New York State Department of Education (see resources below).
They will develop effective formative assessment practices and create tools that will enable them to capture and organize findings in meaningful and manageable ways.
Angela Stockman will push-in to 3-8 buildings twice this year to collaborate with teachers around their findings.
The department will define how the findings influenced changes in practice, which practices improved student learning, and what further support may be needed.
The expertise of teachers and the findings from formative assessment practices will be used to guide decision-making within and beyond the department.
Overview of Work Together 2010-2011:
In response to the findings from last year's formative assessment work, the district has adopted the 6+1 Traits as the common framework for writing instruction.
Teachers will engage in a sustained study of the Traits and best practices for writing instruction by establishing a collegial learning model within each school.
Teachers will formatively assess writing, document findings, and shift instruction immediately in response to what is learned. They will share their findings with their colleagues and with Angela, who will document this work and bring groups together to identify trends.
Angela will provided sustained instructional coaching to teachers at Roy B. Kelly throughout the year.She will be available to work with other teachers by request.
Teachers who require introductory level training in best practices for writing instruction will be invited to participate in a face-to-face or online career credit course.
The expertise of teachers and findings from formative assessment practices will be used to guide decision-making within and beyond the department.
